The unhappiest set of people I have ever studied with or lived with were the first year students of IIMA. The unhappiest or the most stressed I have been is when I was in first year of IIMA. The pressure of academics was not high. What was high was the pressure of social validation and the pressure of finding your spot in the hierarchy. To participate in the social histrionics of summer placements. And to get an investment banking or consulting job. As absurd as it sounds, not getting into a Goldman or a Duetsche or McKinsey made people sad. People were low, depressed, rejected, and feeling worthless depending on their summer placements. Because somehow the herd could pin the entire worth of a person to his or her placements.
Let me put this in perspective. Everyone who came there had their careers set. Everyone who came there were going to end up in the top echelons of India’s corporates. They were all going to get 5-6x of the pay they were getting in B Tech to start with. We should have been thanking our stars for the rest of our lives (which I do now, everyday)
And yet, back then, most, including me, complained, instead of being grateful.
That is what comparing our life outcomes with others does to us. And that is why grateful people who focus on what they have will always be happier
End of an amazing journey. On a much needed break.
