Fear. It's a sentiment that has lingered with me since I was just ten years old, confronted by the harsh words of a middle-aged man in a parking lot. While I've learned to navigate alongside that fear as an adult, recent events, like the tragic shooting of three college students (including two US citizens) in the serene New England town of Burlington, VT, inevitably transport me back to that frightened child. Today, I share this not for my own sake but for the benefit of my younger colleagues and students, who, despite a few well-intentioned statements from their organizations, often find themselves met with silence from their peers and mentors. To all of you, I want to emphasize unequivocally: despite the fear that may linger, you belong here. Your choice to immigrate was not a mistake. Do not allow the misguided actions of a fringe few to overshadow the genuine love that real Americans have for you. In moments like these, I'm reminded of my father's wise words. Having weathered the storm of the Iranian hostage crisis, he once told me, "Armon-jan, America is home to both the greatest devils and the greatest angels. Fortunately, there are far more angels."
