As managers, we know that our teams and employees all go through tough times, both individually and collectively. Stressful projects come in requiring long hours, a long time employee/friend resigns, employees experience hardships in their personal lives, etc. As managers, it is critical to keep a pulse on the “vibes” in the workplace, and inject positivity when needed. When I see my team struggling, I always fall back on a few things that have proven successful: -      Get down and dirty- get in the weeds, work alongside them on the most basic tasks they are handling. This builds culture, and has always given employees a boost when their manager is in the trenches with them. -      Encourage PTO- I try to look back at PTO records and identify the employees who have not taken a day in a while. Get them on the PTO calendar, and encourage them to do something they enjoy outside of the office. This keeps them refreshed and engaged in the workplace -      Show appreciation and recognition- something IST’s CEO Hal Blackman encourages above all else. A simple shout in a team meeting, small praise for a project handled well, gift card for helping a client in a crunch. These things mean the world and you will be amazed at how these small acts can secure long-time employees.
