India won the cricket world cup. That's great. But for us to be a sporting nation there is a lot more to be done. You may not know this, India has won only 35 Olympic medals in 122 years. China won 634 medals in 32 years. India's sports budget last year was 3397 crore. China spent 26,240 crore. We spend 3 paisa per capita per day on sports. And China spends 6 rupees. That’s 200 times more than us. Both countries have similar population size. Yet India is the lowest in the world on medals per capita. We may be brilliant in cricket. But if we've to be a sporting country, we've to spend and support other sports. Watch and celebrate other sports and athletes just the way we do for cricket. We have a lot of talent and potential in other sports to win medals. Government may do their work. But we've to also chip in. If you work in a corporate ask your CSR team to support sports and other athletes. Less than 2% of CSR spends are on sports. Consider other athletes in your marketing campaigns. They have a story to share. At Rainmatter by Zerodha we will do our part. Hope you will do yours. And encourage kids around you to play more sports.

So Insightful in such a Sea of Mad Blue Rush. Thanks for highlighting at pivotal time Dilip Kumar You would agree that a lot of Olympic sports in our country don't have a large pyramid base of participants at the base. On CSR Front, Would Rainmatter by Zerodha be able to guide on raising CSR Funds from corporates to further our mission.? @MyAngelsAcademy- We train under-served children football and through that, essential life skills. Corporate partners are so hard to find and pitch our ideas. Since the CSR mandate back in '14, the needle of spend on sports has hardly moved from 1% to 2%. Look forward to discussing this with you Dilip. Thanks

If you help invest in only marketing across regional languages to encourage kids to come out and play sports, highlighting its benefits, it would be immensely beneficial for the industry. Everything else is in place—infrastructure is being built, access is digitised in Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities, and there is ample supply of coaches and support in terms of nutrition, psychology, and strength & conditioning. CSR funding for sports was ₹236 crore in 2023 and is likely to increase. Sports federations are getting smarter, and Indian sports tech companies are doing good domestically and going global. However, we need people to come out and play. While 60 crore Indians watch sports, only 20 lakh play seriously, with leisure sports participation at around 30 lakh. The number of young participants needs to reach about 50 lakh for serious talent development, competition, and medals.

Your idea was good.the comparison with China was not required. Is China our Benchmark?

That maths doesn't add up. 26240 crore is only ~8x of 3397, if these are in the same currency If these amounts were in the currencies of the respective countries (which is a poor omission, in my opinion), using the exchange rates of the day, that's still around 90x. With both countries having similarly sized populations, not sure where you are getting the chinese spend to be of 200x per capita!

From my understanding, physical education is considered equally important as academics in schools in East Asian countries. Some changes are happening in India as well, but it's uncertain what percentage of schools in India have the necessary infrastructure to support high school and above.

Dilip Kumar - agree, but I'm not fan of an argument spending directly proportional to results, certain be an enabler! I believe in transparency i.e. how it is been functioning that bring in fairness/ fair play opportunities, spending in creating opportunities and not incentivizing in cash or kind! Don't we see less privileged nations do well at elite podium irrespective of their financial status of the individual or as a country! Tough laws, government and void nepotism & corruption!
