Today during #LCAW2024, I attended #OperationHelios, an extreme heat exercise in London including emergency responder organisations, local government, public health and transport. In 2022, temperatures in London hit a record-breaking 40C causing railways to close, hospital operations to be cancelled and lives to be lost. Operation Helios explores what could happen if #extremeheat hits London. The exercise was a recommendation in #LondonClimateResilienceReview's interim report. We were inspired to make this recommendation when #Paris ran an exercise that simulated a 10-day 50°C #heatwave in October. We also recommended making extreme weather a consideration for all business-as-usual resilience exercises in #London and are pleased there are more #severeweather exercises in the pipeline. The exercise will help inform the development of another of our recommendations: a new pan-London Extreme Heat Plan. https://lnkd.in/eTVG5WRH I was also pleased to see the Evening Standard publish a comment piece by Bob Ward, Chair of the London Climate Ready Partnership: https://lnkd.in/ePDm_25x Read the press release: https://lnkd.in/euGUm36G #climatechange #BeatTheHeat George Leigh Johanna Sutton Catherine Barber London Climate Change Partnership (LCCP) London Sustainable Development Commission London Climate Action Week Mayor of London London Fire Brigade UK Health Security Agency London Councils C40 Cities Climate Resilience for All Resilience First London Ambulance Service NHS Trust British Red Cross Shade the UK Metropolitan Police

back in 2016 the huge emergency 'war game' - Triton 2 - was about flooding, specifically of infrastructure. I wonder if we're any more readyhttps://southmanchesternews.co.uk/exercise-triton-emergency-planning/

Preparing for the extreme weather events we will all be facing is essential. The fear is that some will be so long and/or so extreme that we cannot adequately adapt and prepare.

This is super interesting. Thanks for sharing. Is there any advice in here for businesses? Both in terms of keeping their employees safe and for how they can support vulnerable people in communities (eg. helping them access air-conditioned spaces)?
