Ethan Kurzweil’s Post

After 16(!) years at Bessemer Venture Partners, I am leaving Bessemer Venture Partners and branching out to launch a new early-stage venture firm. I’ll have a lot more to say in the coming months but for now, I want to express just how thankful I am to have had the opportunity to work alongside and learn from such an incredible group of partners. I still recall my first interview with David Cowan in 2008 when I pitched him a startup idea (Second Life-style business meetings! h/t - Matthew Witheiler) that he clearly thought was terrible. He told me so, first subtly and then not-so-subtly, until he ultimately steered me to drop that idea and join his team at Bessemer alongside James Cham instead. His pitch was that I could work with them for 2 years, at which point I’d be better equipped to become a founder. I readily signed up but doubted I’d make it beyond the 2 year mark. Two years came and went, and I was awarded with a promotion via this Tweet https://lnkd.in/gMqG2zRq. I realized then that I kinda enjoyed this venture thing, and took pride in being a small part of helping Bessemer innovate to become one of the leading venture platforms of today. I had my fair share of fun, excitement, mistakes, mess-ups and unexpected serendipity over this time, but ultimately never looked back. In the process, I exceeded my original Bessemer tenure target by 8x! The past 16 years have been perhaps the single most salient and constant learning experience of my life. I’ve grown as a person and investor thanks to the wisdom gleaned from my partners and colleagues at Bessemer, from the amazing group of founders I’ve had the privilege of working with, and from the ecosystem of seed and other venture firms that I’ve invested alongside. There are way too many people to name here, but I’m extremely thankful for all of the talented people in the venture and startup orbit who’ve played even a small part in helping me get my venture sea legs. It’s been quite a ride! But throughout this time, I never totally shelved the idea of becoming a founder myself. I now feel the current climate is the perfect timing to take such a leap. I’m excited to share more details on what’s next for me as plans take shape, and in the interim I’m looking forward to continuing to work with and transition my portfolio within Bessemer over the next several months. In summary, thank you to the entire Bessemer team for giving me this opportunity and then putting up with me for all of these years! I hope to make everyone at the firm proud as I step into my new role as Bessemer alum.

Exciting Ethan Kurzweil ⭐️!!! Very happy for you.. Congrats on joinning the Amazon team officially 😛!

Ethan I am assuming this "new early stage venture firm" is actually a double-length rock opera you intend to solo produce in your basement over the next 4 years, which will be a retelling of "Ghostbusters 2", but from Vigo the Carpathian's point of view. If so, congrats!
