In this week’s Freight Market Update, volumes continue to exceed last year’s numbers on the Transpacific route, despite structurally blank sailings due to Cape of Good Hope routings and port congestion in Asia and North America. On the Far East Westbound (FEWB), shippers are pushing for earlier cargo departures to avoid further freight cost increases. Ocean rates for Q3 are increasing in the broader U.S. export market, driven by rising rates in global container markets. In this week’s Freight Market Update, ocean carriers will likely extend the new Peak Season Surcharge into the second half of July. We’re also closely monitoring the extreme weather coming off the coast of South Africa, where we’ve seen waves falling to 23 to 26 feet and high winds. Vessels have resumed transiting around the Cape of Good Hope following the extreme weather in the region earlier. Estimated arrival times for vessels have been delayed by 24-48 hours. In the air freight sector, capacity from Asia is largely sold out for Q4 2024. Flexport advises that shippers focus on forwarders with strong Block Space Agreements (BSAs) and a solid charter base to mitigate delays, be flexible with booking sizes, and explore creative routing for cargo that can wait. In this week’s Freight Market Update, equipment shortages and port congestion in Asia are beginning to improve, though still fall short of meeting current demand. Blank sailings are expected in July and August on Far East Westbound (FEWB) trade lanes. In the Mediterranean, carrier utilization has reached 100%, driving up rates for both West and East Mediterranean routes in July. Global air cargo tonnage dropped 5% (June 17-23, 2024), but rates rose 1% to $2.54/kg—10% higher than last year, and 43% higher than pre-COVID levels. Amid ongoing Red Sea disruptions, shippers continue to juggle a growing list of concerns. “We’re almost right back where we were at the peak of COVID,” Flexport CEO Ryan Petersen told Bloomberg Television. “Back then, people got very emotional [about freight rate surges and breaches of contract]. When the same things happen now, they remember.” Ryan also discussed: • Ocean shipping capacity through 2026, and the resulting impact on pricing • How technology can help shippers circumvent delays during the peak season rush • How an International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) strike could upend supply chains nationwide Watch the full interview here → https://flx.to/BT
