Since Breathe Cities was announced a year ago at London Climate Action Week, 11 cities have begun their journey to providing clean air for their residents. By advancing local-level action, promoting data and building a robust network to share lessons, this global initiative is empowering cities to: 🌬 improve #AirQuality 🍃 drive #ClimateAction 🏥address #PublicHealth problems. Under Jaime Pumarejo's leadership, I’m excited to see what the next year brings.
A year ago today at London Climate Action Week, London Mayor Mayor of London Sadiq Khan and Mike Bloomberg announced the Breathe Cities programme! 🎉 This first-of-its-kind partnership between us, C40 Cities and Bloomberg Philanthropies aims to help cities clean the air we breathe. So far, 11 cities have joined, including Jakarta, Nairobi, Rio de Janeiro and Johannesburg... and more are on the way. Jaime Pumarejo, former Mayor of Barranquilla in Colombia, joined us earlier this year to lead the initiative. Breathe Cities aims to contribute to reducing #AirPollution by 30% across participating cities by 2030, which would: 😷 prevent 39,000 premature deaths 🏭 avoid the equivalent of 284 megatonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. That's a huge win for our health and the climate. Learn more ➡️ https://breathecities.org/
Simplifying data, enabling decision making, improving lives
2wBrilliant news, it needs an overall vision with guiding principles but the application of the solutions can be quite unique to each city. A tough one to pull off but well needed.
