This PCB was CT scanned to evaluate porosity in a BGA, inspect the joints of suspect components, and evaluate the wires for straightness. Once porosity has been defined it's as simple as "point & click" to understand each void's size, location, and other characteristics. 3D Scanning & CT Scanning is used to measure the volume of complex tanks or reservoirs. For open systems with clear line of sight laser scanning may suffice, but inaccessible geometry can be collected via CT. This demonstration shows a condenser and centrifuge tube where we have calculated the wall thickness and measured the true volume at various graduation marks. We see a deviation up to 27% at the smaller, more sensitive graduated volumes. This data is particularly useful for molded components that have a significantly different shape than design intent (ex. parts have warped inward, meaning actual volumes read as increased volumes on the molded graduation marks.) Poor profiles and porosity in stent welds may lead to reduced mechanical strength, increased risk of corrosion, poor biocompatibility, and compromised drug delivery for drug-eluting variants. Industrial CT scanning is one of the advanced inspection methods for qualifying the manufacturing processes of stents and other highly complex and safety-critical devices. Check out these industrial CT images of a printed titanium implant demonstrating porosity, profiling and wall thickness, and trapped powder. If trapped powder is not completely removed from products its release during product service lifetime could cause serious problems. For medical implants with materials that are supposedly biocompatible, metallic powder can cause inflammation and prevent normal blood vessel formation.
