It was a pleasure welcoming Yale School of Nursing Dean Dr. Azita Emami and Deputy Dean Dr. Tatiana Sadak PhD.PMHNP.RN.FAAN. to the Moses/Weitzman Health Center this week. Following a robust discussion of mutual areas of interest in health and health care, and exploring interests in research, education and training, Deans Emami and Sadak had an opportunity to see the Community Health Center, Inc. model of primary care in action with an extensive tour through the CHC clinical facility. In addition to CHC, the YSN Deans met with leaders from other parts of the health system, including ConferMED, The National Institute for Medical Assistant Advancement (NIMAA), and the Consortium for Advanced Practice Providers. CHC and YSN have a 45 year history of collaboration in education and training and we are excited about what the future holds for this enduring partnership. See some photos below from the YSN visit with Moses/Weitzman Health System CEO Mark Masselli and Sr. Vice President and Clinical Director Margaret Flinter.

Excellent work on an critically important topic of youth mental health-- well done, Wildaline Figaro, MHA, Tonantzin E. Juarez, and Jessica McCann, MPH, CPH. Thank you, April Joy Damian, PhD, MSc, CHPM, PMP, for your leadership around research and innovation that fosters work of this caliber from Weitzman Institute and our greater system.
In their new Forefront article, Wildaline Figaro, Jessica McCann, and Tonantzin Juarez from the Weitzman Institute explore the potential role that community health workers (CHWs) can play in addressing the youth mental health crisis, summarize existing issues, and offer policy recommendations. "We are experiencing a youth mental health crisis, as illustrated by countless studies. The 2022 National Survey of Children’s Health found that 25.8 percent of children ages 3–17 have a reported mental, emotional, developmental, or behavioral problem, yet only about half of children with an issue received treatment or counseling. Additionally, suicide rates among adolescents increased by 48 percent between 2011 and 2021, with disproportionately high increases among Black youth. Adolescents experiencing stigma, discrimination, and few social supports and services are at an even higher risk of mental health issues. These trends are not surprising given that many adolescents faced reductions in access to social supports, as well as primary and mental health services, during pandemic-related transitions to virtual schooling. Failing to address mental health issues during adolescence has consequences well into adulthood, affecting both physical and mental health and limiting a child’s opportunity to lead a fulfilling adult life."
