It was the first day of the summit, reminiscent of your first day of school: a little intimidating, a little exciting. At 8 a.m., the crowd gathered. You picked up your badge, looked at the schedule, and made your way to the amphitheater or classroom where the lecture awaited. 🎒📚 I didn’t know anyone —I was the new kid again. Maybe we all were. My friend Julian Tse did not make his flight—he would miss the first day. 🛫 While in Davos, last January, we attended the Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth “Tomorrow’s Leaders” dinner. As part of this community, we were now invited to the Global Summit in DC during the The World Bank and International Monetary Fund General Assemblies. 🌍🏛️ I made my way to the amphitheater where the programming was set to start. As soon as Kiran Gandhi opened the summit with a powerful meditation before presenting “Sounds of Antarctica,” I felt I was in the right place, and these strangers were friends and kindred spirits waiting to be known. 🧘❄️ Kiran, aka Madame Ghandi, went to #Antarctica to record the natural soundscape—from the ice melting to the penguins squealing and the water rushing. From these organic sounds, she created a sound pack for all musicians to use. 🎶🐧 A couple more panel conversations followed before lunch, where we had an hour to break and connect ahead of more thought-provoking programming. 🗣️🍴 As I wandered looking for a place to sit, I saw a young woman working on her computer. A chair was available beside her. I approached timidly, asking with a warm smile if I could sit there. She obliged kindly and made space for me. 😊 We introduced ourselves and sparked a conversation. Basic questions were asked—hi, what’s your name? What led you to this event? What do you work on?—the typical small talk exchanges you often find at summits, gatherings, and conferences. 👋❓ Suddenly, my brain tilted. Tori, Tori Bell! From Inclusion Unpacked! For a few minutes, we had exchanged pleasantries, but Tori hadn’t mentioned her last name and was originally on assignment here for another company she worked for. Her own startup, Inclusion Unpacked hadn’t come up. 🌟 A couple of years ago, Tori Bell and I had connected over LinkedIn. Her venture had caught my attention, and we connected briefly online. Years later, we were brought back together for an impromptu meeting in real life. 🌐🤝 Connection quickly grew organically, and the serendipity of our meeting created warmth and familiarity. I made my first friend, just like you make your first friend on that uncertain first day of school, and suddenly you are not alone anymore—you walk together. 👭💬 These moments of connection and serendipity are what makes summits special. They remind us we are part of a larger community, working together towards common goals. As we continue to meet, learn, and grow, let's embrace these opportunities to build lasting relationships and collaborate on creating a more inclusive and equitable world. 🌟🤝

As Ethan Mollick pointed out, recent studies revealed that GPT-4 can create highly persuasive political ads, with messages increasing support for certain issue stances by up to 12 percentage points. Interestingly, micro-targeting with user data did not enhance this effect. This finding raises important questions about the perceived limitations of AI in personalized messaging. Is it a case of AI’s current inability to tailor messages effectively, or could it be that we haven't yet optimized our prompting techniques to fully leverage AI’s potential? Given the broad success of GPT-4 in generating persuasive content, I lean towards the latter. In other areas of research, we've seen that fine-tuning prompts and contextual inputs can significantly enhance AI performance. This suggests that with more refined prompting strategies, we could unlock even greater capabilities in personalized messaging. However, as we delve deeper into these possibilities, it’s essential to consider the ethical implications. The power of AI to influence political opinions and behaviors brings with it significant responsibilities. We must ensure that these tools are used transparently and ethically, avoiding manipulation and respecting user privacy. At the summit, the real-world integration of cryptocurrency, like Compass Coffee accepting crypto payments, highlighted the strides towards mainstream adoption. 💪🏽 The discussions extended to blockchain's role in securing medical records and in decentralizing housing markets, showcasing both the promise and challenges of these technologies. 🌍 Each panel underscored the critical need for thoughtful regulatory engagement, pushing us towards a more inclusive and efficient future.
