“The military lifestyle itself presents unique challenges that can contribute to substance misuse... This stigma is deeply rooted in misconceptions and fear. There’s a pervasive belief that seeking help for addiction is a sign of weakness, a stain on one’s record of service. This fallacy is fueled by the fear of repercussions such as career stagnation, loss of security clearances or even discharge. Fredericka Ford, CEO at RCA Capital Region, and Blythe Maynard, CEO at RCA Bracebridge Hall, recently co-authored the article, "Gearing Up for a Battle Against Addiction" in the military publication At Ease. Ford and Maynard stated, “When military members and veterans search for treatment options, many are disappointed to find there aren’t many addiction recovery centers in the U.S. that offer programming to address the specific profession-related challenges they face. Thankfully the industry is recognizing this unmet need.” Colleague, CEO of Raritan Bay and New Jersey Air National Guard, LeoDante Ognibene, is also quoted in the article, “I understand the importance of recognizing the often overlooked challenges faced by these courageous individuals. As you plan your vacation, this is a reminder that summers in recovery look different for everyone. Some take that extra time to enjoy solitude at home, by the beach, a lake, or a local coffee shop. Of course, many keep busy by attending meetings, hosting barbeques, or doing group vacations. Others take up new hobbies like camping, working out, fishing, hiking, etc. Which one are you? If you're early in recovery and this is your first summer sober, we understand it can be challenging. It can be challenging for people further along in recovery, too. So, know you're not alone.
