New research shows that running optimized AI workloads on AWS versus on-premises can reduce the associated carbon emissions by up to 99%. At re:Invent last year, I stated that sustainability needs to be a tier one non-functional requirement. With AI now being baked into nearly every application and process, we have a shared responsibility to minimize its environmental toll. At AWS, we are innovating to make cloud the most environmentally responsible way to build and run modern applications — from advanced cooling techniques to transitioning to renewable energy sources, and developing custom silicon chips optimized for efficient AI compute, such as Trainium and Inferentia. Tinkering fuels innovation and curiosity. It allows us to truly understand the tools and systems we work with at a granular level. Recently, I've been tinkering with Rust, a language gaining popularity for building reliable, safe, and sustainable systems at scale. The best way to learn is by doing. So, I turned our simple summarization proof of concept, Distill, into a CLI leveraging Rust's performance and memory safety advantages. I love it when I can be the "practical voice of reason" for businesses looking into AI. Today, it was aviation customers at the International Air Transport Association (IATA) AGM meeting. With almost all the major airlines using Amazon Web Services (AWS), I am fortunate to be able to share some great success stories that distinguish reality from wishful thinking. #AWS #IATA #IATAAGM

 As you may know, I take plenty of notes. And I’m always on the lookout for new tools and strategies to refine my process. Recently, I decided it was time to get my hands dirty — so, my team and I set out to build a simple note-taking aide, which transcribes and summarizes our meetings using Bedrock. Today, we’re making the proof of concept available to everyone. Additionally, I’ve been working with Amazon Q to convert this sample app into a Rust CLI, which I plan to share in the upcoming weeks (after I have a few Rustaceans at Amazon review it for me). As someone relatively new to Rust, I have to say that Q has been a helpful collaborator, and non-judgmental teacher. If you haven’t already, I encourage you to give it a try. It’s a reminder that it’s not always about solving the “big” problem in one swoop. Sometimes it’s about chipping away at everyday problems. One of the leadership principles at Amazon is “Success and Scale Bring Broad Responsibility”. On a recent trip to Ireland, I saw first-hand how local leaders, an energy agency, and AWS are living this principle, using the waste heat from the local data centre to warm the community. This innovative approach not only reduces emissions in the growing area of Tallaght, but is a blueprint for how communities and industry can come together to achieve remarkable outcomes.
