Introducing RiS Spotlight, the monthly newsletter from Race in STEM

Welcome to the very first edition of RiS Spotlight, the monthly newsletter from Race in STEM, which aims to inspire, inform, and connect our community! We’re excited to create a central hub for our wonderful network, (that includes you!) to keep you up to date with everything that is going on in our world – which includes all our partners and sponsors externally and internally across the IN Group brands.

This community was born to empower voices of colour and other multi-cultural professionals on the global STEM stage; but also be a vessel for collaboration, a catalyst for career opportunities and of course, a safe, judgement-free space to share experiences and ideas! You can find out more about us here.

For those of you who don’t know me, I’m Steve Fuller, Global Community Director at BioTalent and Founder of Race in STEM, every day I get the privilege of connecting with leading voices, with the aim of encouraging, inspiring and profiling people of colour and cultural backgrounds in the world of STEM. I am excited to take you on this journey where we’ll be shining a spotlight on ALL the great content we have created as well as raising the profiles of individuals in the industry and sharing their talents.

So, what’s happened in Race in STEM this month…

Podcast with Ral Ogbah

For this month’s podcast I sat down with Rapulu (Ral) Ogbah, a Pharmacovigilance and Quality Assurance professional based in the UK; and Head of Professional Development for Black Pharma community, which aims to amplify voices and increase the representation of ethnically diverse professionals across the pharmaceutical industry. Listen to the complete conversation.

RiS at ISMPP conference in Washington

Along with the US BioTalent team, I attended the 20th Annual Meeting of the International Society for Medical Publication Professionals (ISMPP) which took place in Washington. The conference was centered around the theme ‘Storytelling: Its Art and Power.’ This year’s gathering delved into both the creative and methodological aspects of medical publications and communications, emphasising their influence in making healthcare more relatable. Alongside BioTalent’s, Elizabeth Bevan I hosted an insightful roundtable which delved into the topic of DEI, read our key takeaways from the event here.

Speaking at this year’s virtual RQA event

We took part in the virtual roundtable discussion where Piran Sucindran, Mandy Budwal-Jagait, Nicholas Connor, Heather Wells and myself explored the pivotal role of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) as our industry grows globally and the workforce becomes more diverse. As Quality and Clinical professionals, we play a crucial part in shaping the industry we work in; so we will be uncovering how to best showcase representation in all walks of life. Together, we'll discuss how embracing DEI enriches our profession in the global age. Explore the full event.

Attending a great session at the Institute of Physics

The Employers Network for Equality & Inclusion (enei) invited BioTalent and Race in STEM to take part in some thought-provoking debates with conversations focusing on; increasing diversity in leadership, engaging staff who are sceptical about DEI and more. It was great to share stories, listen to challenges / frustrations and listen to what has been implemented and is working across different sectors.

What’s coming up...

Preparing for this year’s Dublin Tech Summit (29th and 30th)

This year I will be moderating a panel on - The ROI of DEI: Driving Business Profitability through Diversity and Inclusion. The discussion will showcase real-world examples and case studies that highlight the tangible ROI of DEI initiatives, from diversity's impact on innovation and customer satisfaction to its influence on financial performance. You can book your tickets now… but if you can’t join us this time, we will be publishing some content about the panel in the coming weeks so watch this space!

Join our next webinar!

On Tuesday 11th June we are delighted to be joined by four incredible experts who will be discussing representation in clinical trials. After an inspiring conversation on the broad and complex topic of diversity in clinical trials back in March, we are reuniting our panel for part 2, for more details or to register please click here
