The Boox Palma is an amazing gadget I didn’t even know I wanted
I thought I was buying an e-reader. And I was! But the smartphone-sized device does just enough other stuff that it now goes with me everywhere.
New chips, new screens, new gadgets
On The Vergecast: how an E Ink screen changes a smartphone and how Qualcomm chips and AI might change the PC world.
As spotted by Boing Boing, David L. Farquhar shares the details of the largest CRT TV ever produced. The Sony PVM-4300 “weighed about 450 pounds, stood about 27 inches tall,” and was too large to squeeze through a standard door frame.
Built by hand, only 20 were exported from Japan to the United States where they were sold with “a significant markup.”

The new and improved Windows PCs are finally here
Plus: the excellent new Elden Ring DLC, a great calendar app for Windows, an AI history podcast, and much more.
We are officially in the “if you can dream it, someone can build it” stage of foam warfare. This is the Final Condition, a true break-action shotty worthy of Destiny or Doom. Its designer plans to release files in the near future — despite a recent setback.
The company has updated its DJI Mimo iOS app with a handy (or wristy?) new feature that allows the stabilized gimbal to be remotely operated from an Apple Watch.
According to DroneDJ, that includes remotely monitoring live video from an iPhone, adjusting the framing of a shot by panning and tilting the gimbal, snapping pics, starting and stopping video capture, and activating subject tracking.
Users on Reddit have discovered a new feature for their Nooks. ePub files that have been manually added will now have their reading progress synced across devices — a feature previously only available for ebooks purchased on the e-reader.
This feature is only available on Kindles for files that have been uploaded through Amazon’s email service, and is still not available on Kobo devices.

You’ll need a new smart lock if you want Apple Home to ‘magically’ unlock your door
Apple is finally putting its U1 ultra wideband chip to use in the smart home with a new hands-free unlocking feature. But it’s not compatible with any existing smart locks.
CMF by Nothing’s “Phone 1” looks like it will have a cool rotating dial — perhaps like the CMF Buds. You can see a few more teases of the phone on CMF by Nothing’s X account, and for rumored specs, check out 91Mobiles.
The Phone 1 will be announced on July 8th at 5AM ET alongside the Buds Pro 2 and the Watch Pro 2.
It will be available starting on June 25th and will update the original Backbone One controller with a translucent green shell (reminiscent of the Jungle Green N64), laser-etched buttons, an aluminum D-pad, and glow-in-the-dark Post Malone branding.
The Backbone One: Post Malone Limited Edition Controller will be limited to just 500 units, and that exclusivity is reflected in its $199.99 price tag.

Un Kyu Lee’s Micro Journal Rev.6 is a purpose-built writing tool that trades the polish of Astrohaus’ Freewright devices for a cheaper price tag. The $169 kit pairs a hot-swappable keyboard with a monochromatic LCD display, a 30-hour battery, and wireless Google Drive syncing. The design files are also available through GitHub, eventually letting anyone 3D print and build their own.

Disney’s “real” lightsaber wowed us with a glowing blade that extended and retracted, but since it refuses to sell it to Star Wars fans, the YouTube channel HeroTech made its own using LED strips, motors, and a magician’s cane. The effect is convincing, and if you’ve got the engineering skills you can even buy the plans to build your own.
Nikon’s new $2,500 Z6 III has the world’s first partially stacked CMOS sensor
And all I wanted to do was take photos of birds with it.
Called the Logitech MX Ink, it will work on the Quest 2 and Quest 3, and can be used to draw in 2D on surfaces or 3D using “full 6DoF positional tracking,” according to UploadVR.
The MX Ink will have haptic feedback, pressure sensitivity, multiple buttons, and will support a double tap feature. Users will reportedly be able to seamlessly switch between it and Quest Touch controllers.
The super simple gadget trying to replace your phone
Plus, in this week’s Installer: a music history doc you’ll love, the surprisingly great new Yahoo News app, Apple’s new Passwords app, and much more.
I think most people will be worthy, considering how easy it is to unlock this lock shaped like the MCU version of Thor’s hammer.
Truth be told, I’d still find something to use it for.
The Siri face no longer exists, at least in the watchOS 11 developer beta, according to AppleInsider. If it’s gone in the release version this fall, that may be the first watchface ever retired, the story notes.
The Siri face debuted with the Apple Watch series 3. Its big idea was that it would surface info as you need it, but new Smart Stack features may make it redundant.
