Aldi have revealed a new line-up of wine, and while it’s all in the name of sustainability, we reckon it’ll have you yearning for days gone by.
The budget supermarket has swapped traditional glass bottles for alternatives made out of paper, with the aim of being more eco-friendly.
The packaging is made from paperboard and lined with a pouch to contain the wine – and it’s fully recycable.
But eagle-eyed shoppers have compared the offering to a student night out staple: good old box wine.
Of course, this new range, which features two wines, the Cambalala South African Shiraz and Sauvignon Blanc, looks a little more sophisticated, as they could easily be mistaken for a traditional glass bottle.
Facebook users were quick to make the comparison. Morag McGee said: ‘Like wine boxes then so not really new,’ and Robert Hewitt added: ‘Surely wine in a carton has been around some time.’
Commenter Gerry More agreed: ‘So essentially, its just a box of wine in the shape of a bottle,’
But other shoppers weren’t so concerned with the packaging at all. ‘Don’t care. It’s going straight in my large wine glass,’ wrote Marion Mclaughlin.
And Anne Sprout said: ‘Don’t care what it’s made from as long as there’s 13% good quality Aldi wine in it.’
Aldi say the change will cut their carbon footprint, and at five times lighter than your average glass bottle, they’ll be a great option in the summer for those carrying bottles to picnics in the park.
They also claim they’ll be the UK’s first supermarket own-brand paper wine bottles, which launch in stores on March 18, Global Recycling Day, and cost £7.99 each.
Julie Ashfield, managing director of buying at Aldi UK, says: “Shoppers are striving to become more sustainable in their everyday lives, looking for small ways to make a big difference for our planet.
‘Our Buying Teams are continuously thinking of how we can evolve our ranges to offer greater value and greener choices. We are proud to be the first supermarket to launch an own-brand paper bottle, helping to drive sustainable change.’
