Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the outcome of posteroventral pallidotomy (PVP) for Parkinson's disease (PD).

Method: The data from 100 patients with PD receiving PVP were retrospectively analyzed with UPDRS.

Result: PVP significantly improved PD symptoms. Several typical symptoms were improved:tremor in 72% patients, rigidity 81%, akinesia 71%, gait 60%, balance 64% and off state 75%.

Conclusion: PVP improves Parkinsonian symptoms, and is superior to classical thalamotomy. Microelectrode recording is essential to surgical results and avoidance of severe complication.
