Constipation and fecal incontinence are problems that are frequently encountered in daily practice. Over the last decade biofeedback therapy has emerged as a useful adjunct for the treatment of these problems. Biofeedback therapy is a learning process that is based on "operant conditioning" techniques. Biofeedback training aims to restore a degree of continence that enables patients to resume their activities to a satisfactory level with good success rates and prolonged benefits. The technique requires height levels of motivation not only in the patients but also in the instructor who is providing verbal feedback about the adequacy of a patients performance.
