Abstract

PIP: In France, the current situation in training of physicians and paramedical personnel in family planning is rudimentary. Most of the impetus has come from the French Movement for Family Planning which holds postgraudate courses. Graduate physicians and medical school boards consider contraception of minor importance. Midwives receive only a theoretical lecture; general practitioners who spend typically 25% of their time with women on contraception, receive 1-3 hours training. Gynecologic specialists devote most of their training to pathology. Future training will have to entail an integrated program involving sexuality, the patient's right to choose a method and to choose to bear children, and training in each year of medical schooling, as is done in the Sinai Hospital. Midwives and other paramedics such as social workers will also have to have an integrated program in sexuality and contraception.
