Abstract
A retrospective study was undertaken to evaluate the impact of captopril on intrahospital mortality and the duration of hospitalization in Nigerians with congestive heart failure. In 1989 and 1990, the mortality rates were 13.7% and 15.2%, respectively, and it appeared to be reduced to 6.6% in 1991 after the introduction of captopril. There was a significant (p less than 0.001) increase in the proportion of patients with early discharges (less than 10 days hospitalization) following the addition of captopril to the standard antifailure regime in Nigerians.
