Abstract

Early detection and institution of prophylactic measures to prevent the return of the predominantly chronically recurrent depressive disorders can considerably improve the outcome. For the family doctor as the source of initial treatment, this means a major responsibility (task) in the management of such patients. Severe depression fundamentally impairs quality of life and the performance of those so affected. The most effective treatment is considered to be a combination of medication and appropriate psychotherapy. In order to be able to develop the necessary therapeutic measures, the patient needs to have a certain prior store of trust in the physician. The expectations of the patient in the treatment are determined by the atmosphere generated by the doctor during the initial consultation. If he can combine the necessary empathy with clearly understandable information, he has on optimal basis for success.
