Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of IFN-gamma for treatment of allergic rhinitis.
Method: Sixty patients studied were divided into 2 groups randomly. The control group was given specific immunotherapy, the observe group was given specific immunotherapy and IFN-gamma treatment (1000000 IU im qod). Symptom score and level of serum IL-4 and ECP were compared pre and post treatment in two groups after 6 month.
Result: In control group, the symptom score were 10.6 +/- 2.3 and 4.2 +/- 1.8 pre and post therapy, IL-4 were (545.3 +/- 86.2) ng/L and (320.4: +/- 76.3) ng/L, ECP were (24.3 +/- 8.2) microg/L and (12.4 +/- 6.3) microg/L. In observe group, the symptom score were 10.8 +/- 2.7 and 3.5 +/- 1.6 pre and post therapy, IL-4 were (547.8 +/- 84.6) ng/L and (280.4 +/- 87.3) ng/L, ECP were (25.1 +/- 7.7) microg/L and (10.4 +/- 5.1) microg/L. All the data P < 0.05. And after the therapy, there were significant difference in the observe group and the control group.
Conclusion: IFN-gamma may modulate the immune system and was effective in the treatment for allergic rhinitis.
