Background: Ovarian cancer recurrence presenting in an inguinal hernia sac is rare. Only 1 case of malignant ovarian cancer growing into an inguinal hernia sac has been reported in the English literature. Combined positron emission tomography (PET) and computed tomography (CT) may have a potential role in the early detection and anatomical localization of recurrent ovarian cancer.
Case report: This is the first case of occult metastasis from ovarian cancer recurrence growing in a right inguinal hernia sac identified using combined FDG-PET/CT.
Conclusion: Preoperative combined FDG-PET/CT imaging may have utility in the detection and anatomic localization of occult ovarian cancer recurrence, which may increase the likelihood of complete resection.
