Abstract

A registry of hospitalized stroke patients in Denmark included 39,484 patients; 48% women, 52% men. Median time from stroke to admission was 1 day; median follow-up 1.5 years. A multivariate survival analysis showed that although time-dependent, the female/male stroke mortality rate generally favoured women from first day post-stroke, reflecting a female survival advantage. The analysis also showed that women who survive stroke live longer than men.
