Br J Hosp Med. 1991 Aug;46(2):84-90.

Abstract

This article reviews current evidence concerning the pathological basis of asthma and the inflammatory mechanisms involved. Findings from postmortem and bronchoscopy studies are used to discuss the characteristics of inflamed airways and the roles played by various inflammatory cells. Possible long-term sequelae and the implications for treatment are also reviewed.
