A true bandwidth reduction in the transmission requirements of holograms is achieved by recording the diffraction pattern of a scene in the horizontal direction and the actual image in the vertical direction. The image reconstructed from such a unidirectional hologram will lack vertical parallax but will exhibit all other properties of a hologram, providing a virtual reconstruction with depth information. The basic characteristics and limitations of the technique, as well as recording and reconstruction configurations, are described. In addition, experimental results illustrating the main features of the method are given.
