Objective: To investigate the mental health and risk behavior of married adult HIV/AIDS subjects derived from paid blood donation in the rural of Anhui Province and explore the risk factors for formulation intervention measures.
Methods: One hundred and fifty three adults selected from AIDS or HIV+ affected families (affected group) and 153 healthy adults (HIV-) from non-affected families (control group). Only one married adults was investigated from each family. Anonymous questionnaires composed of SCL-90, Self-esteem Scale, Life Event Scale, Risk behaviors and 20 items on HIV/AIDS knowledge were completed by every participant.
Results: The rates of education more than 6 years, annual per-capita income more than 1000 yuan and migrant temporary workers are lower (P < 0.001) in the affected group than the control group, and the rate of loss spouse is higher (P < 0.05) in the affected group than the control group. The total scores and the detection rate of 9 risk factors of SCL-90 in HIV adults (59.5%) are higher than those in HIV- adults (15.7%) (chi2 = 62.537, P < 0.001). The scores of self-esteem in HIV+ adults are lower but the number of life events in their families is higher than HIV- adults (P < 0.001). The frequency of drinking more liquor in recent 30 days is higher in HIV- adults. The frequency and quantity of smoking in HIV+ adults are higher than those in HIV- adults (P < 0.05). The rates of quarrel between husband and wife, self-injury, suicidal ideation in the HIV+ adults are higher than those in HIV- adults (P < 0.05).
Conclusion: Active and efficient intervention should be taken to improve the mental health of married adult with AIDS/HIV+ derived from paid blood donation and to reduce the risk behaviors.
