"Ben" Roe was the eighth president of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons. He was a fourth-generation native Californian, a hall of fame athlete, a pioneer in the development of cardiac surgery, and a crusading reformer of professional standards, education, and ethics. Educated in both northern California and in Boston, his career reflected the influence of both cultures and his California heritage.
