Clinical and radiologic evaluation of patients before TIPS creation

AJR Am J Roentgenol. 2014 Oct;203(4):739-45. doi: 10.2214/AJR.14.12999.

Abstract

Objective: The purpose of this article is to highlight the clinical and radiologic evaluation of patients referred for transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) creation.

Conclusion: TIPS creation is an effective procedure for portal diversion in the setting of recurrent variceal bleeding or diuretic refractory ascites secondary to portal hypertension. Close collaboration between hepatologists and interventional radiologists is important for appropriate patient selection. Pre-procedural clinical and radiologic evaluation is fundamental for successful management of these patients.

Keywords: TIPS; portal hypertension; refractory ascites; transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt; variceal bleeding.
