Radiation Treatment Planning for Head and Neck Cancer with PET

PET Clin. 2012 Oct;7(4):395-410. doi: 10.1016/j.cpet.2012.06.006.

Abstract

Radiotherapy plays an important role in the management of head and neck cancer. Intensity-modulated radiotherapy is a highly conformal radiation technique that allows delivery of high-dose of radiation to the tumor and high-risk areas while sparing the normal structure. PET scan is a useful tool in identifying the border of the tumor and small lymph nodes with metastatic disease. Future directions in dose escalation and the use of PET with new tracers other than 18F-fluoro-deoxy-D-glucose are discussed.
