Perioperative fluid management is a fundamental component of surgical care that has been shown to influence patients' outcome. Essential factors to consider are the volume, the timing and the choice of the solution to be given. All of them have been the subject of relevant articles in the recent literature. The present article reviews these different factors with the objective to help the clinician to develop the most appropriate intraoperative fluid administration strategy according to the individual patient needs.
