Chronic Salmonella Osteomyelitis in a Healthy, Immunocompetent Man: A Case Report

JBJS Case Connect. 2021 Dec 22;11(4). doi: 10.2106/JBJS.CC.21.00356.

Abstract

Case: A 26-year-old healthcare professional presented with knee pain and was found to have Salmonella osteomyelitis of the distal femur. Two operations, including antibiotic bead placement followed by a 6-week course of oral ciprofloxacin, were successful in eradicating the infection.

Conclusion: Salmonella osteomyelitis is a well-known complication of hemoglobinopathies but is unusual in healthy individuals. This case required molecular testing and multiple cultures to obtain a diagnosis. Treatment may require debridement and antibiotics.
