[Clinical findings in 270 patients at the diabetic outpatient clinic of UOEH Hospital]

Abstract

The purpose of this report is to describe the clinical findings of 270 diabetic patients examined at the diabetic outpatient clinic of the 1st department of internal medicine, from the establishment of our University Hospital of Occupational and Environmental Health (UOEH Hospital) to January 1985. These 270 patients underwent physical and laboratory examinations, and the following clinical statistics were collected. 1. The male-female ratio was 0.96. 2. The peak age at first visit and at the onset of diabetes was 50 or over. 3. Thirty-six percent of the patients had been diabetic for less than a year, and 17% for more than 11 years. 4. The majority of patients resided around UOEH Hospital, that is, in Yahatanishi-ku, Wakamatsu-ku, Onga-gun and Nakama-shi. 5. Seventeen percent of the patients had done office work, but 56% were without occupation. 6. A family history of diabetes in at least one relative was revealed in 31% of the patients. 7. Seventy-two percent of the patients showed more than + 20% of maximum body weight index in the past. In addition, 26% of the patients showed more than +20% of body weight index at first visit. 8. Thirty-six percent of the patients examined suffered from diabetic retinopathy, 44% were seen to have neuropathy, and 23% suffered from nephropathy. Eleven percent of the patients were in the state of triopathy.
