Effects of daily 30 MCG norgestrel on glucose, insulin, cholesterol and triglycerides during 1 year's time of use

Abstract

PIP: A prospective study to determine the metabolic effects of norgestrel, a progestogen only contraceptive, was undertaken. 3 hour oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) as well as measurements of plasma insulin during OGTT, serum cholesterol, and triglycerides were performed before and at 1 month, and 3, 6, 9, and 12 months after daily administration of 30 mcg norgestrel to 11 Thai women. There was no statistical significance observed in any of the glucose, insulin, and cholesterol levels. Triglycerides values were lowered but, except for the 6 month test, were not statistically significant. The data suggest that daily use of 30 mcg norgestrel for 1 year has a negligible effect on fasting total cholesterol and triglyceride levels as well as blood glucose and plasma insulin concentrations measured during the OGTT.
