Kolhapur: An army jawan, who was poisoned by his wife and her accomplice on July 18, succumbed on Sunday while undergoing treatment at Command Hospital in Pune.
He was cremated on Monday at his hometown in Nool village.
According to the Gandhinglaj police, Army jawan Amar Bhimgonda Desai (39) had served in the Indian Army for more than 15 years and was posted in Jammu and Kashmir.
He had returned to his village for his holidays from July 3 to Aug 1. Desai hailed from Kasba Nool village but was staying with his wife (33), son (8) and daughter (5) in his bungalow in Gadhinglaj town.
On July 18, after having dinner, Amar was sleeping when he suddenly felt like someone was trying to force-feed him something. He was blindfolded, and his hands and feet were tied. He started screaming for help when the neighbours rushed and broke into the house. The accomplice hit a neighbour on the head and fled the spot. The wife was arrested immediately by the Gadhinglaj police, while her accomplice was arrested the next day.
A murder case has been registered against the wife, Tejaswini Desai (33), and her accomplice, Sachin Parshuram Raut (30). Police inspector Gajanan Sargar said, “The Army jawan was forcibly fed gramoxone, which is a highly toxic drug. His wife is currently in judicial custody, while her accomplice is undergoing treatment in a private hospital in Belagavi as he himself consumed poison after the crime.”
A funeral procession for the jawan was taken out from the main road of the village and his last rites were performed at the ground of New English School before he was cremated.
