Kolhapur: All stakeholders of sugar production industries have made a demand to the Central govt to increase the price of sugar consumed indirectly through bakery products, soft drinks, etc., to Rs 42 per kg, said BJP’s Rajya Sabha MP Dhananjay Mahadik.
For the last five years, the Minimum Selling Price (MSP) of sugar is Rs 32 per kg.
Meanwhile, the Union govt has increased the amount to be paid to sugar cane farmers each year.
The mills have gone into short-margin, as most of them don’t have floating capital to run te operations.
The MP said 75% of sugar produced is sold to commercial industries, while the remaining is sold for direct consumption through retailers.
“The sugar price needs to be revised to ensure the mills do not fall further into a debt trap. The demand is made by millers to increase the price of sugar sold to factories that make candies, condiments and soft drinks,” said Mahadik, who also runs a sugar factory in Solapur district.
Mahadik also demanded the Central govt grant a subsidy of Rs 1 per unit of power produced through bagasse by the sugar mills.
Currently, the centre procures bagasse-based power at Rs 4.65 per unit.
