Labor Day, a unique celebration to honour workers all over the United States and Canada, for their enormous contribution to society, is observed every year on the first Monday of September. Labor Day was established at a time when the workers in America had an arduous 12-hour a day shift and 6-7 day work week, and young children aged 5-6 were working in factories and mills.

Two labour union leaders were among the first to demand a holiday to recognise contributions of working people in New York City in 1882 and acknowledge how their efforts added to the prosperity of the country.

This year Labor Day is being celebrated on September 2 (Monday), 2024. Since Labor Day is all about celebrating the US and Canada's workforce and also taking time off for some relaxing activities, here are unique ways to celebrate the day with your family and friends.

1. Host a get together

Whether you are planning to spend this day with your friends or family, a get-together to relax and rejuvenate is recommended. Arrange a barbecue, go camping, or just host a cozy party to celebrate the spirit of Labor Day. The idea is to have some fun, get together, socialize and create lasting memories with your loved ones.

2. Take a day trip

Taking a break from the mundane activities, a day trip to a nearby picturesque location is the perfect way to celebrate Labor Day. Exploring natural surroundings, visiting places of historical importance, and disconnecting from routine activities can refresh your senses and give an opportunity to pamper yourself.

3. Spend quality time with people you love

The entire point of earning a living is to be able to support your family as well as live your dreams. As you chase your dreams and fulfill your financial responsibilities, it's important to spend some quality time with the people you like, as that is what lifts your soul and brings moments of joy to your life.

4. Attend a parade

Labor Day parades are one of the main attractions associated with the day. The tradition is closely linked to the inception of the important day. On September 5, 1882, ten thousand workers participated in the first-ever Labor Day parade that began from City Hall to Union Square in New York City. Since then this tradition continues even in modern times.

5. Movie night

What can be more refreshing than watching a movie with your favourite pals or family members and disconnect from reality as you get engrossed in the cinematic world of the fascinating characters. People who prefer indoor settings and would rather quietly celebrate the special day can spend the day watching their favourite movies or series or bingeing on classics.
