India News Live Updates: Gujarat man arrested for sending 3 Uttarakhand youths to Thailand for fake jobs

Uttarakhand police has arrested a man from Gujarat for allegedly sending three youths to Thailand and selling them to a foreign company, officials said on Monday. According to police, the matter came to light on July 10 when Rajendra Saun, a resident of Banbasa, filed a complaint and said that his son, Lalit, along with his friends Vikas and Kamlesh had gone to Bangkok for job opportunities. However, he was unable to contact them.

Based on Saun's complaint, an FIR was lodged and the police contacted the Indian Embassy. During the investigation, the police found that a man named, Rahul Upadhyay, a resident of Khatima, along with his friend Jai Joshi from Gujarat, called seven youths from Uttarakhand and sent them to Bangkok under the pretext of providing them with job opportunities, Champawat Superintendent of Police (SP) Ajay Ganpati said.

They then sold the youths to a foreign company for 10,000 Thai Baht, Ganpati said.

The police also found that the said company allegedly took the youths to an undisclosed location in Myanmar and made them commit cyber frauds, Ganpati said.

The police have arrested Joshi and was presented in court on Monday, he said. They have received information that Updhyay is travelling to Dubai.

The missing youths have been rescued and sent to their homes with the help of the Indian Embassy, Ganpati added.

World News Live Updates: Belarus leader pardons 37 prisoners convicted of 'extremism'

Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko on Monday pardoned 37 prisoners convicted of "extremist offences" -- a term Minsk uses to describe political prisoners -- in a fresh round of amnesties.

Belarus has hundreds of political prisoners, many of whom were jailed after Minsk cracked down on massive anti-Lukashenko protests in 2020.

"Ahead of National Unity Day, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko signed a decree on pardoning 37 more people convicted of extremist offences," state media Belta reported.

It said the list included people with chronic illnesses and pensioners.

The announcement on Monday marked the fourth round of pardons since July.

The identities of the released prisoners have not been made public.

Lukashenko's office called the move "another gesture of humanism on the part of the state towards the wrongdoers", claiming that the prisoners had "repented."

World News Live Updates: UK PM meets Italy’s Meloni for illegal immigration talks

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer met his Italian counterpart Giorgia Meloni in Rome on Monday to discuss tackling illegal immigration, a day after another Channel migrant shipwreck claimed eight lives.

Starmer, whose centre-left Labour Party was elected with a crushing parliamentary majority in July, has vowed to fight illegal immigration, a hot-button topic in British politics for years.

"Here, there's been some quite dramatic reduction (in migrant arrival numbers) so I want to understand how that came about," Starmer said in Rome ahead of his meeting with Meloni.

He was speaking while touring a national immigration coordination centre with Italy's interior minister, Matteo Piantedosi. Starmer was received with a welcome ceremony at 12:00 local time (10:00 GMT) at Rome's Villa Doria Pamphili before his meeting with Meloni.

Far-right riots shook cities and towns across England and Northern Ireland shortly after Starmer's election, the UK's worst unrest since 2011, with mosques and migrant accommodation centres often targeted.

The perilous cross-Channel journeys migrants attempt from northern France have posed a fiendishly difficult problem to solve for successive British prime ministers.

India News Live Updates: Teenager held for killing landlord's 2 sons over Rs 4 lakh 'security money' dispute in New Delhi

A 17-year-old boy was held for allegedly shooting dead his landlord's two sons for pressuring the family to vacate the property in Shahdara here without returning their Rs 4 lakh given under a deal, officials said on Monday. The accused was apprehended on Sunday from southeast Delhi's Nizamuddin area following a tip-off, they said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (crime) Rakesh Paweriya said the juvenile and his family lived as tenants in Asfak's house at Rani Garden in Shahdara's Geeta Colony.

Paweriya said the accused told the police that his family had given Ashfak Rs 4 as "security". And according to a deal between the two families, they could live in the house without paying any rent till the Rs 4 lakh was repaid to them.

Later, Asfak shifted to another place after getting married for a second time.

After this, his two sons -- Irshad alias Bobby (30) and Shahid (20) -- allegedly started to pressure the tenants to vacate the property without paying the security back, the officer said.

On Saturday, Irshad went to the juvenile's house and started hurling abuses at him which angered the boy, the officer said.

He brought out a pistol already kept in the house and shot Irshad in his head who died on the spot, Paweriya said, adding the boy locked the room and walked to Shahid, just a few metres away and also shot him in his head from point blank range.

The accused left from the spot after killing the two and hid the pistol at the house of his cousin at Rani Garden.

Paweriya said the pistol has been recovered but it is yet to be ascertained where it was sourced from.

The juvenile, who was arrested with the help of the technical evidence, is enrolled in Class 12. He used to work as a helper with an AC mechanic in the area.

Police said the deceased had previous criminal involvements: Irshad had two cases including a robbery case against him, while Shahid was allegedly involved an attempt to murder case.

India News Live Updates: Protests erupt at IP University after student suicide following expulsion

Protests erupted at the Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University on Monday after the suicide of a 25-year-old student who was recently expelled by the university administration. Gautam Kumar, a first-year MBA student, allegedly committed suicide by jumping from the seventh floor of his hostel building on Sunday.

He was a native of Vaishali in Bihar and was enrolled at the IP University main campus in Dwarka Sector-16, Southwest Delhi.

He was expelled for allegedly consuming alcohol and narcotic substances in his hostel room along with five other students.

World News Live Updates: Thousands protest in Brussels as EV troubles threaten Audi plant

Thousands of people demonstrated in Brussels on Monday in solidarity with the workers of a nearby Audi factory making electric vehicles that the German carmaker is considering shutting down amid slumping in sales.

Audi said production at the plant, which employs about 3,000 people in the Belgian capital, will end in 2025 -- a move analysts say is symptomatic of the troubles afflicting Europe's wider car industry, amid low demand and competition from China.

"In a few weeks we're going to find ourselves unemployed, with no money and no prospects," said a 37-year-old worker who preferred not to give his name, holding a placard reading: "Our lives are not an assembly line".

Audi is a subsidiary of Volkswagen, which earlier this month made the bombshell announcement that it was considering the unprecedented step of closing production sites in Germany.

On Monday, police said more than 5,000 people marched through Brussels as part of the protest.

Some lit firecrackers and smoke bombs, others held trade union flags and signs reading "We are not for sale".

Organisers said they wanted to spur European Union leaders to act and invest massively to save jobs in the industrial sector. They put turnout at more than 10,000.

The demonstration comes as workers at the Brussels factory have gone on a prolonged strike, refusing to return to work after the summer break.

India News Live Updates: 6 boys held for riding two-wheelers with Palestinian flag in Karnataka

India News Live Updates: Six minors were apprehended after a video of them allegedly riding two-wheelers holding the Palestinian flag surfaced on social media platforms, police said on Monday. The incident occurred on Sunday around 1 pm on Dantaramakki road in Chikkamagaluru town here, they said.

According to police, three of them were on a two-wheeler and one of the pillion riders, a 17-year-old boy was allegedly holding and waving a Palestinian flag while three of their friends followed them on another bike. They also shouted slogans on 'free Palestine'.

"We apprehended all the six boys involved in the incident. They are all minors. We have registered a case under appropriate sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including sections for disturbing communal harmony. Both the vehicles have been seized along with the flag," a senior police officer said.

During interrogation, the boys said they had watched some videos of a procession in Uttar Pradesh in which people were seen carrying palestinian flags and so they wanted to make a similar reel on Instagram.

Earlier in the day, former BJP national General Secretary and MLC CT Ravi alleged that without permission a rally was held yesterday in more than 20 two wheelers and one four wheeler holding a Palestine flag.

"I have got information that some influential people had tried to influence in favour of the people involved, more than 200 people came in front of the police station, so an explanation was sought and they were let go... I urged the police for a detailed probe and to destroy the network behind them, the incident should not be taken lightly," he said.
