'Nothing to do with rape': 6 rapists on why they raped

In these edited excerpts of interviews of convicted rapists, a look at why sexual crimes are committed, how they are perceived in the minds of the criminals and what triggers them

In the foreward of the acclaimed 1982 book Why Men Rape: Interviews with Convicted Rapists, Jill Tweedie sums up her assessment by saying: “Rape is the cancer of sexuality — the ugly growth that eats at the heart of the relationships between men and women.” Like syphilis, the British feminist, writer and broadcaster says, rape is a disorder that deforms healthy sexuality in men.
The book, edited by Sylvia Levine and Joseph Koenig, includes testimonies of 10 convicted rapists — who were involved in behaviour modification therapy programmes in Canadian institutions at the time of their interviews — talking candidly about their perceived behaviour and actions.
