A 10-year-old student died on Thursday, after being stabbed the day before by a man while on his way to a Japanese school in southern China, according to Japan government officials. They have requested Beijing to provide details of the stabbing incident and implement "preventive measures". A suspect has been taken into custody.
Japan's foreign minister Yoko Kamikawa expressed her condolences and described the student's death as "extremely regrettable," especially considering the requests for caution and enhanced safety measures around the anniversary of Japan's invasion of China in the 1930s.

Kamikawa also instructed Japanese schools in China to review their safety measures and urged China to provide details of the attack and take all necessary steps to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
According to Lin Jian, a spokesperson for the China's ministry of foreign affairs, the student was stabbed by a man approximately 200 meters (220 yards) from the gate of the Shenzhen Japanese School. "The attacker was arrested on site. The case is still being further investigated," Lin stated during a daily briefing. However, the motive behind the attack in Shenzhen remains unclear.
The Japanese embassy sent an email to Japanese citizens living in China, warning them to be vigilant and take precautions, citing recent knife attacks. The Japanese consulate in Guangzhou, which oversees Shenzhen, called for measures to prevent such incidents.
On June 24, a knife attack at a school bus stop for a Japanese school in Suzhou, a southeastern city, resulted in the death of a Chinese national who attempted to stop the attacker. A Japanese mother and her child were also injured in the incident.
Earlier in June, a Chinese man stabbed four US university instructors at a public park in Jilin, located in the northeast, as well as a Chinese person who tried to intervene.
