The study…

    What does gender mean to Doctor Who? What does gender mean to society? How do the two relate, and is the series reflecting long-established views or leading social change? Utilising a combination of historical research, news articles, interviews with the cast and production team and primary analysis of experts from the series, this written piece aims to explore these questions from a range of perspectives (from the production team’s, the cast’s and the BBC’s commercial agenda). The study consists of an examination of technical and visual codes including language, camerawork, iconography, setting and symbolism, and seeks to answer a complex issue and its wider implications; does Doctor Who challenges or subverts gender norms?
