New statistics showed 17% of the weddings that have taken place in Guernsey during 2024 were for non-residents

Guernsey has seen a rise in couples from outside the island choosing the Bailiwick as their wedding destination.

The increase has followed marriage regulations that came into force in 2021, allowing weddings to legally take place anywhere on the island when conducted by a registered celebrant.

The change meant couples could take advantage and tie the knot at Guernsey’s beaches, cliff tops, and historic castles, at any time of day or night.

In 2021, 23 weddings were for non-residents - this increased to 38 so far in 2024 according to Royal Court of Guernsey.

Photographer Ben Fiore said Herm and Sark were "perfect" for starry night weddings

Photographer Ben Fiore said: “There’s a big rise in beach weddings. Herm and Sark are perfect for starry night weddings, thanks to little light pollution.”

Shaun McDonald from The White House Hotel in Herm said: “We’ve had weddings with guests from Australia. Many hadn’t heard of Herm or Guernsey, but they’re already planning to return.”

Imogen Remfrey, event manager and wedding planner of Bonita Events, added: “Half our couples aren’t local. The new law allowing marriages almost anywhere has made more people aware of the possibilities.”

John and Bethanie Mottram from Southampton chose The White House in Herm for their special day.

Mrs Mottram said: “You’re so close to the UK but it doesn’t feel like you are, so you still get the eloping on a small island feeling without having to drive all your guests across the entire world.

“Everyone was so helpful. Our guests are already booking to come back, and we plan to visit every year for our anniversary.”
