  abstract = {\"Serendipity\" has both a classical origin in literature and a more modern manifestation where it is found in the descriptions of the problem solving and knowledge acquisition of humanities and science scholars. Studies of information retrieval and information seeking have also discussed the utility of the notion of serendipity. Some have implied that it may be stimulated, or that certain people may \"encounter\" serendipitous information more than others. All to some extent accept the classical definition of serendipity as a \"fortuitous\" accident. The analysis presented here is part of a larger study concerning the information-seeking behaviour of interdisciplinary scholars. This paper considers the nature of serendipity in information-seeking contexts, and reinterprets the notion of serendipity as a phenomenon arising from both conditions and strategies - as both a purposive and a non-purposive component of information seeking and related knowledge acquisition.},

  abstract = {Semantic or cultural systems are sets of concepts connected by meaningful relationships, and they exhibit properties similar to those of populations of biological organisms. Drawing upon ideas from evolutionary biology and methods from information technology, this article explores the potential for research and engineering on the evolution of semantic systems. Such work in cultural genetics requires two things: (1) a rigorous but evolving taxonomic system to categorize cultural artifacts, elements, and clusters, and (2) a set of hypotheses about the processes that cause evolutionary change. This article illustrates systematic approaches to cultural taxonomy with data on the popular ideology of the space program, science fiction motion pictures, nanotechnology books, and nanotechnology research grants. It offers hypotheses derived from evolutionary and population biology that might be useful in explaining cultural evolution.},

  abstract = {As ontology development becomes a collaborative process, developers face the problem of maintaining versions of ontologies akin to maintaining versions of software code or versions of documents in large projects. Traditional versioning systems enable users to compare versions, examine changes, and accept or reject changes. However, while versioning systems usually treat software code and text documents as text files, a versioning system for ontologies must compare and present structural changes rather than changes in text representation of ontologies. In this paper, we present the PromptDiff ontology-versioning environment, which address these challenges. PromptDiff includes an efficient version-comparison algorithm that produces a structural diff between ontologies. The results are presented to the users through an intuitive user interface for analyzing the changes that enables users to view concepts and groups of concepts that were added, deleted, and moved, distinguished by their appearance and with direct access to additional information characterizing the change. The users can then act on the changes, accepting or rejecting them. We present results of a pilot user study that demonstrate the effectiveness of the tool for change management. We discuss design principles for an end-to-end ontology-versioning environment and position ontology versioning as a component in a general ontology-management framework.},

  abstract = {Innovation substantially reduces the practical value of traditional communication models. This paper examines the role of conceptual, user-centric modelling of web information systems as a primary means of standardized visual communication between and within organizations. It presents the development and potential of the extended World Wide Web Design Technique as a visual, consistent, and semantically rich language to share knowledge about content and structure of both planned and deployed systems. As web information systems represent semantic networks in themselves, it is only natural to leverage their semantics to provide analytical tools and intuitive user interfaces. Visual frameworks based on the extended World Wide Web Design Technique enable interactive visualization of the users' access patterns. Limited, statistically oriented representations of commercially available web-tracking software are enhanced by a map-like view based on the system's unique topology. When integrated into the user interface via multiple, tightly coupled views, such automatically generated site maps help users to explore the available navigation space.},
