Abstract
Ice, or ice and wind, on conductors in general
account for the most critical loading to be taken
into consideration in the design of towers, when a
line is located in an area subject to these meteorological
phenomena.
The most critical areas in this respect, in Italy,
are the mountainous regions of the Appennines, which
run longitudinally from one end of the country to the other.
Since the 420 kV system was first developed, a
series of experimental facilities have been installed
in the Appennines, to investigate icing problems:
in particular, these consist of a series of simple
devices, which provide only the maximum yearly
ice overload in a given area, and a more complete
experimental station in a very critical area (Frad~
rena Pass) for the study of the influence of all the
parameters affecting ice formation on conductors.
The report states the main principles on which the
test facilities are based, and summarizes the results
of more thar. 10 years of keeping records,
giving the correlations obtained between the differrent
parameters (i.e., ice formation as a function
of conductor diameter, height above ground, wind
characteristics, conductor temperature, etcc.).
