GUS Scott-Morriss believes enjoyment levels have proved pivotal in his stunning start to the season for Southend United.

The in-form right wing back heads to Solihull Moors with the Shrimpers this weekend having scored seven goals in nine games so far this term.

And Scott-Morriss believes he is also benefitting from becoming more experienced.

“I’ve been learning a lot these last two years,” said the 27-year-old.

“I waited a long time to be a pro and this is only my third season doing it.

“The thing I’ve learnt this season is to enjoy your football and the two years I’ve had I’ve learnt a hell of a lot.

“JD (Jason Demetriou) I know he’s not here anymore but he taught me a lot and coming into this season it’s really pushed me on to take every game as it comes.

“I go to try score in every one too.”

Scott-Morriss has done well where that is concerned so far this season and is currently the second highest scorer in the league.

But he remains determined for more, “I try to strive for whatever I can do,” said the wing-back.

“I know I harp on about it but I love playing football.

“It’s taken me a long time to get here and play in front of crowds of 7,500 and 8,000 fans so I want to make the most of it.

“I lost time in the lower leagues so I won’t take it for granted now.

“ I want to make sure I play as high as I possibly can but I also want to play as well for the team as I can as well.”

Scott-Morriss will be looking to do that again this weekend.

But he is expecting a tough test against a Solihull side who sit eighth in the National League standings.

“They’re a good outfit,” said Scott-Morriss.

“They’re always been in and around the play-offs and I know they’re a good side.

“I know a few lads there and they’ll be trying to put what happened last season right.

“We’ll have to make sure we’re on our A game.”

The Shrimpers beat Solihull 5-0 and 3-0 last season back head into this weekend’s clash sitting 17th in the table after suffering back to back defeats.

And, despite not wanting to get carried away, Scott-Morriss knows performance levels must improve.

“It’s one game at a time and it’s still early days,” said Scott-Morriss.

“We could’ve won on Tuesday and we would’ve been a point outside the play-offs.

“It’s still early but we do need to get our performance levels higher.

“It’s frustrating we haven’t been quite at it yet.

“It shows us about the team that we’ve still been able to pick up a lot of points but to get to where we want to be we have to up the performances.”

And Scott-Morriss will be fit enough to try and help that happen tomorrow.

“Hopefully I’m all good,” said the wing-back who was limping late on at AFC Fylde.

“It was just a dead leg.

“I’m taking a chill on it and hopefully it’s all good for Saturday.”
