Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani etched his name in Major League Baseball history on Thursday, becoming the inaugural member of the 50-50 club on Thursday against the Miami Marlins. A 50-50 season consists of 50+ home runs and 50+ stolen bases in a single season. Ohtani, who became the fastest player to record 40 home runs and 40 stolen bases in a single season, hit his 50th homer of the season in the top of the seventh inning after stealing his 50th and 51st base earlier in the game. The Japanese two-way sensation is 5-for-5 with seven RBIs in the game, giving the Dodgers a 14-3 lead with his historic home run. The closest anyone has come to the 50-50 mark was Atlanta Braves' Ronald Acuña Jr., who stole 73 bases and hit 41 home runs in 2023, and Alex Rodriguez, who as a member of the Seattle Mariners hit 42 home runs and stole 46 bases in 1998. First, YouTube subjected viewers to longer unskippable ads. Now, not even pausing your screen will let users escape. The Google-owned platform confirmed Thursday that it has “widely rolled out Pause ads to all advertisers.” When the video is paused, an ad will pop up on the side of the screen, according to social media posts.

In some corners of society, there appears to be a shift in the way people talk about kids. Every so often, a provocative social media post sets off predictably polarizing discourse about the presence of children in daily life. There was the woman who snarkily suggested that toddlers should be leashed. There was the guy who proudly posed outside of an establishment that declared itself “dog friendly” and “child free,” and the person who defended him by proclaiming that it was “fine and normal to dislike children.” In certain online communities, people sometimes express these attitudes even more jarringly, using terms such as “crotch goblins” for kids and “breeders” for parents. These attitudes show up offline, too. The issue of crying babies on planes is a frequent source of conflict, with some passengers glaring, yelling or more recently, locking the offending child in the lavatory to admonish them. And as people who seek to avoid loud or unruly children make known their preferences for childfree restaurants, grocery stores and flights, more businesses are catering to them. The implication (joking or otherwise) is that children are a nuisance and adults shouldn’t have to endure them if they don’t want to.

A group of news organizations filed an emergency petition, asking Nevada's highest court to unseal the ongoing family succession battle playing out in a Reno courtroom that will determine the future of Rupert Murdoch's vast media empire. ➡️ Murdoch is seeking to amend the family trust that he established decades ago, giving his four oldest children equal votes over the future of his conservative media empire after he dies. ➡️ The 93-year-old patriarch wants to change the structure so that his eldest son and chosen successor Lachlan – who is more politically aligned with his father than the other children – will remain in charge for decades to come. But his three other eldest children are fighting the change. Read more from CNN's Hadas Gold: https://cnn.it/4gt4BX1

Sales of previously owned homes in the United States fell sharply in August, despite mortgage rates plummeting that month. But much more housing demand will likely be unleashed onto the market after the Federal Reserve finally cut interest rates. ➡️ Existing home sales, which make up the vast majority of the market, slumped 2.5% in August from the prior month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 3.86 million, the National Association of Realtors reported. ➡️ Meanwhile, home prices continued to climb last month, with the median price of an existing home rising 3.1% to a record high of $416,700.
