Commercial sports drinks loaded with electrolytes claim to boost hydration levels. But do they actually work? Research published in the Open Access journal Nutrients MDPI confirms that they do. In the study, they analyzed fluid retention during rehydration following exercise-induced dehydration in male athletes. The study, cited in TIME, found that 2.6% of the athlete's body mass increased after consuming sports drinks with high levels of sodium and carbohydrates. The authors concluded that sports drinks with high levels of these components do contribute to rehydration and can be beneficial for athletes. Researchers from Shinshu University investigated a novel treatment for atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is characterised by the narrowing of arteries caused by the build-up of cholesterol, fat, and blood cells that form plaque. In the study published by Open Access journal Biomolecules MDPI the researchers studied atherosclerosis from a molecular level. The researchers targeted a protein in vascular smooth muscle cells which encourages plaque accumulation. They identified that targeting this protein could decrease the proliferation of VSMCs and plaque build-up. Because of this, they concluded that nucleic acid drugs are promising drug options to treat vascular diseases such as atherosclerosis. Read more here: https://brnw.ch/21wNb5q
