HBO’s ‘Camping’ and CW’s ‘Charmed’ and among the week’s top viewing choices

CLEVELAND, Ohio – A new version of “Charmed” and a new HBO comedy, “Camping,” are among the top viewing choices for the week:

“Charmed” (9 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, WUAB Channel 43): The CW’s reboot of the 1998-2006 series that ran on the WB is surprisingly enchanting. This feminist reinterpretation stars Madeleine Mantock (“Into the Badlands”), Melonie Diaz (“The Belko Experiment”) and Sarah Jeffery (“Shades of Blue”) as the three sisters who discover their witch powers after the death of their mother. “Jane the Virgin” creator Jennie Snyder Urman is the one mixing new and old elements into a simmering elixir loaded with potential.

“Camping” (10 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, HBO): Adapted from a British series by “Girls” executive producers Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner, this comedy stars Jennifer Garner as tightly wound and obsessively organized Kathryn, a chronic pain sufferer who plans a camping trip to celebrate the 45th birthday of her ever-patient husband, Walt (David Tennant). Family and friends have no choice but to go along. Also in the cast are Juliette Lewis and Ione Skye.

“AMC Visionaries: Eli Roth’s History of Horror” (midnight, Sunday Oct. 14, AMC): Horror filmmaker Eli Roth (“Cabin Fever,” “Hostel”) examines the roots, themes and impact of his genre in this seven-part series, talking terror with the likes of Stephen King, Rob Zombie, Jamie Lee Curtis, Quentin Tarantino, Greg Nicotero, Jordan Peele, Haley Joel Osment, Robert Englund, Linda Blair, Diablo Cody, Rutina Wesley and Tony Todd.

“My Dinner With Herve” (8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, HBO): Directed and co-written by Emmy winner Sacha Gervasi (“Anvil! The Story of Anvil”), this film explores the final days of actor Herve Villechaize (“Fantasy Island,” “The Man with the Golden Gun”). The hard-partying Villechaize committed suicide at 50 not long after an all-night 1993 interview with Gervasi. Inspired by those experiences, Gervasi’s movie begins with a struggling journalist (Jamie Dornan) spending a wild night in Los Angeles with Villechaize (played by “Game of Thrones” star Peter Dinklage). An unlikely friendship develops, resulting in drastic consequences for both of them. Andy Garcia plays Villechaize’s “Fantasy Island” co-star, Ricardo Montalban. Also in the cast are Mireille Enos, Oona Chaplin, David Strathairn, Harriet Walter, Fiona Baskin and Wallace Langham.
