Ratings and Reviews
Love it!
Absolutely love the app! The design and the UI is very aesthetically pleasing and using it as a GPS navigator is easier than Google. That’s where the good part of it ends.
The bad part of the app is that Google maps is much better at demonstrating road and weather conditions, as well as better at finding footpaths when you’re walking.
Another great thing about Google maps that I think would fit in nicely, is the community aspect of it. For adding places, fixing minor mistakes and information, Google awards you points as well as gives you different titles like “local expert” or whatever, with the last Apple Maps update, where the changes you make and the ratings you give are connected to your Apple ID. I believe it is a step in the right direction, if this app has a more community feel to it, it would surpass Google maps in no time.
Almost Perfect
This is my go to navigation app - except if my destination is critical to me, in which case I use Waze. (In other words, when I'm not just using the app to avoid traffic or track arrival time but trying to get to a destination in an area that I really don't know). Most of the time, Maps is spot on, whereas Waze, which is not so easy to follow or relaxing to use, has been 100% accurate.
Apple Maps has easily the clearest mapping and direction instructions, I absolutely love it. It's almost impossible to misinterpret them. Another excellent feature is the traffic data. Today it showed temporary roadworks outside my daughter's house. Remarkably up to date and accurate.
Occasionally, however, the directional changes given are slightly late; and it's business database is less reliable than Google's. The final issue I have, which is more annoying than critical, is trying to change my home address when using Apple Maps with CarPlay. Within the app, my home is shown correctly, but CarPlay insists they I live a street or two away! I've found no way to fix this.
It is a good app
So people give this app a lot of shade. I think it’s quite a good app for one that comes with your phone. It’s helpful and sometimes points out roadworks. I’ve used it for walking routes many times, and it’s been very helpful.
However, I do have a problem with the “binocular” feature, where it’s like you’re actually there. That is, I don’t have a problem with the feature itself (it’s truly revolutionary) but the coverage of said feature.
Most of the United States is covered, but none of the United Kingdom, which is kind of important considering I live there and in absence of street directions or binocular view in most of the United Kingdom, it’s harder to get around than it would be if I lived in the United States. Please fix this - there are many iPhone users in UK.
Before you say you can’t do every country, Google Maps has zero problem with United Kingdom coverage, so I will transition to a Google phone if this isn’t fixed. Google Maps is definitely better.
