Search Instructions

Artist/Maker
Select “Artists” instead of “Objects”. Enter only the last name of the artist or maker. If searching on Nationality, use the adjective form of the country (French, German, Thai, Kenyan, etc.)

Titles
Enter one word or phrase of the title.

Medium
Enter one word or phrase of the medium.

Description
This is a search for any words that are in the physical description of the object. Enter one or more words.

Date Range
This is the year of the creation of the object. If searching for one year, type the year in the first and the second field. If searching on a range, type the earlier year in the first field and the later year in the second. If searching on a B.C.E. date, place a minus (-) sign before the year. Or use the slider left or right to zero in on a range.

Credit Line
Enter one word or phrase. For best results enter only the last name of the donor or fund.

Provenance
Enter one word or phrase. For best results enter only the last name of the previous owner.

In Collections
This is a list of the curatorial departments responsible for the collections. The default is All, which searches across all departments and will provide the most results from your search.

Thesaurus
This is a set of terms used to describe the various attributes of an object. Click on the triangle to the left of Culture-Nationality or Category to open the list. Scroll down to select an item.
Example: French ceramics (this would be the same for German paintings or Thai textiles)
